The 2017 edition of the Osun SWAN Sports Merit Awards is billed to take place on 19th October, 2017.

The prestigious ‘Osun SWAN Sports Merit Awards’ is aimed at celebrating those who have rendered outstanding services to the development of sports in the country and beyond.

The awards presentation will take place at the magnificent Atlantis Civic Event Centre, Osogbo on Thursday, October 19th 2017 and will be supported by well meaning individuals across the country that recognise the importance of supporting sports in their community and beyond.

According to a release signed by the Chairman Award Planning Committee, Olayinka Olawole, the ‘Osun SWAN Sports Merit Awards’ will be presented in five categories:

* The Meritorious Gold Award of Excellence in Grassroots Sports Development. The criteria for winning this award are as follows:

During the year, the awardee would have — (A) Made significant impact to the development of sport in his community.

(B) Given a substantial amount of time to volunteer in local sport in any capacity; made a significant impact which contributed immensely to the development of a local club, community, organisation or school.

(C) Possessed a positive and encouraging attitude that inspired and made a positive impact on grassroots sports.

* The Meritorious Gold Award of Excellence in Sports Administration. The criteria for winning this award are as follows:

During the year, the awardee would have — (A) Achieved success in his chosen sport(s); made a significant impact on the sport or on his club/team.

(B) Had been a role model for others and has raised the profile of the sport.

(C) Shown a commitment to personal development, teamwork and supported the development of others.

* The Meritorious Gold Award of Excellence in Sports Entrepreneurship and Innovations. The criteria for winning this award are as follows:

During the year, the awardee would have — (A) Made a significant impact on sports through technological innovations.

(B) Enhanced the development of some of the latest trends in the sports industry, through clothing, equipments and technology.

* The Meritorious Gold Award of Excellence in Women Football Development. The criteria for winning this award are as follows:

During the year, the awardee would have — (A) Possessed a positive and encouraging attitude that inspired and made a positive impact on Women Football.

(B) Contributed significantly to the development of women sports in his community.

(C) Has been a role model for others and raised the profile of women football locally and internationally.

* The Long-term Achievement Award. The criteria for winning this award are as follows:

During the year, the awardee would have — (A) Contributed immensely to the development of local sport(s) in any capacity; made a significant impact on a local community and country as a whole.

(B) Had inspired the development of sports over a period of time.

The event will also be used to confer ‘Prestigious Award’ on some individuals that have contributed to the development of football and other sports in Nigeria. Some of the recipients of this award includes Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, Sani Lulu Abdullahi, Hon. Ayo Omidiran, Ademola Adeshina, Seyi Akinwumi, Alhaji Ahmed Fresh, Aisha Falode, Akin Alabi, Kunle Soname, Tunji Brown, Sen. Jide Omoworare, Aderonke Ogunbanwo Ajibola, Sen. Fatai Buhari, Hon. Lawrence Ayeni , Tade Azeez and a host of other worthy personalities will be celebrated on that day.

The high point of the event will be the investiture of the title of the “Osun SWAN Pillar of Sports” to the former secretary general of the Nigeria Football Federation, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, for his long term meritorious service to the development of sports in the State and beyond.

The event promises to be a stylish and high profile affair and will also be used to welcome a host of personalities, who have created a sporting pathway and contributed immensely to the growth of the Nation through sports and other means.

Notable personalities expected to grace the grand event includes the Royal Father of the day, the Ooni of Ife, HRM, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi (Royal Grand Patron of Osun SWAN); the Royal Host, the Ataoja of Osogbo, HRM, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun; the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salaam (Patron of Osun SWAN), who is also the chairman of the occasion; Kayode Oduoye and many others.
