Honourable Orie being escorted by the referee

The Chairman of Ugo Parker Motors Ltd, Honourable Elder S.N. Orie, has commended the management of University of Uyo for its women’s football development.

In an exclusive chat with Soccer Classique, the Ebekuedike Ndi Igbo, who was the guest of honour during the finals of the 2018 Indomie SUG Sports Fiesta women’s football competition, expressed his delight in the school’s effort in developing women’s football.

“Women’s football in Nigeria has not really developed the way it should despite the abundance of talents in the country. And this is because women’s football is not taken seriously in the country and Africa.

“It is therefore heart-warming to see the University of Uyo according serious attention to the women’s game.

“I appreciate the school management and the Students’ Union Government for organising this football competition for women. I’m really happy to witness this development.

“You can see what it means to the ladies on the field. The expressions on their faces are priceless. They are really having fun. Some of them as you can see are really good while others are still coming up.

“I commend the Vice Chancellor and his management team for ensuring that women’s football is developed in the school.”

He also enjoined the students to take their academics seriously and not to lose focus.

“…my advice to the students is that they should always remember that they came to school to study, and to concentrate on that.

“Some came to school and totally forgot why they are here. They even forgot they sat for Jamb for three to four years before gaining admission. As a result, some of them ended up joining cultism.

“They should not forget why they are here.”

On why he came for the game despite his tight schedule Honourable Orie said, “I appreciate the youth and I like encouraging them because I was once a youth and now I’m a man.”

Women’s football in University of Uyo has taken an upward trajectory since 2016. Last year, the school’s women’s football team, Tusker Ladies, took part in the maiden edition of Martha Udom Female Students’ Football Championship where they came second. The school also organised Uniuyo Olympics women’s football competition for the various Faculties. This year, more football activities for the female students are underway.
