Ituen Academy Football Club have won the 2017Akwa Ibom State Football League, having amassed the highest number of points.
In their last home game — which incidentally was the last game of the league season — played this evening at West Itam Secondary School stadium, the second team of Ituen Academy played an entertaining goalless draw against their counterparts Palm Syrup Football Club.
The owner and Director of the Academy, Honourable Prince Idongesit Ituen and his wife, were among the spectators that witnessed the football club’s moment of glory. Also present was the Akwa Ibom State Football Association chairman, who handed the league trophy to the captain of the side Harry Idongesit.
The Academy which is barely 2-years-old have had a successful year having qualified for YSFON — a national football tournament — and now winning the Akwa Ibom State Football League title. They also won the South South Zone of the National Under-18 Football Championship.
The coach of the champions Effiong Okon, in his reaction gave thanks to God for the successful campaign.
“I am grateful to God for enabling us become the league champions. I give Him all the glory.”
When asked if his boys can challenge for the YSFON title he said: “The boys have been properly groomed and they are ready to face any team.
“In the league we only drew two games, this last home game and one other. Since we’ve won the league already, we had to change the squad to give opportunity to those that have not played.
“So, the league’s success will serve as a motivating factor for the boys to face any challenge.”
Ituen Academy will travel to Delta State in two days time for the National league play-off, thereafter, they will head to Abuja to compete in the YSFON tournament.
